Since airing of the first season in 2005, Jim was presented by the showrunners as an opposite of Dwight Schrute, who can initially be perceived as the series’ antagonist and the most annoying and pathetic person in the office. On the contrary, Jim was shown as charming, friendly, helpful, and, to viewers’ content, the greatest pranker.

If we take a closer look at his jokes, they, however, turn out to be not as harmless, especially towards Dwight, whom Halpert is constantly humiliating throughout the whole 9 seasons of the show. His jokes disturb not only his rival, who doesn't deserve all this bullying, but also other colleagues, being an interfering factor to the office’s work.

Moreover, what angers the criticizing part of The Office’s fans most, during the first seasons Jim is pursuing an engaged woman, Pam. Despite all the obstacles regarding her attitude towards her back-then fiance and her being destined to eventually become Mrs. Halpert, such Jim’s behavior can be considered socially inappropriate.

Thus, Jim is clearly written as a flawed character, as he is often presented as arrogant and inconsiderable, even apart from the above-mentioned aspects. Indeed, he is definitely not entirely the funny nice guy that he appears to be on the surface.

Nevertheless, no one is perfect, and it’s the common opinion shared by the people who are against the theories implying that Jim is a villain.
