Why Supernatural Revival Is Doomed to Fail, Explained by Eric Kripke
These days are long gone now.
While many fans of Eric Kripke’s writing are now enjoying The Boys, as the show is about to release its fourth season, there is another group of fans, still longing for the return of The CW hit Supernatural. Even more so, they wish to see Kripke take back the creative control over the revival, leading the Winchester brothers to more adventures.
The Boys fans, on the other hand, have an opposite reaction to the idea of the show lasting for many more seasons, instead of ending at 5, like Kripke used to promise before. However, there isn’t much to fear right now. The creator doesn’t truly believe any similar show could repeat Supernatural’s success today.
Is Supernatural Season 16 in the Works?
While fans believe they have seen many different hints and clues pointing to the revival of the series, there is no official confirmation of this happening. Just as there is no debunking of these rumors. Right now, the fandom is frozen in a state of waiting, with people not knowing what will happen next.
Even if the show does come back, Eric Kripke, the creator of the show who left after season 5, doesn't think it would be possible to recreate the same success today. Here is what he told The Hollywood Reporter.
“Supernatural did just well enough that it just wasn’t in the red. And when we started, it was the network of Gossip Girl and 90210. We were the one Goth kid in the back of the class — but, by the time we left, the entire place was genre-nerd central. Now the market demand is to just make really expensive stuff — like us, Fallout and House of the Dragon. ”
For better or worse, there is no way that The Boys will be in the same category as Supernatural and get a decade of stories. Because the show is so costly, the studio will keep a close eye on the ratings and cancel it the minute it starts to underperform.
Unfortunately, the same will be true for Supernatural's revival if it gets greenlit on any network. Given The CW's rebranding, it is unlikely that the show will return to its home channel, so it'll have more chances on streaming. However, given the realities of streaming production, season 16 may still fail to attract enough viewers.
If you want to see where all the clues lead, keep an eye out for the latest Supernatural news and updates. And if you missed the show, you can binge-watch seasons 1 through 15 on Netflix.
