Sorry, Team Lucas.

Summary

  • The Season 10 finale of When Calls the Heart disappointed many fans with how the writers handled one of the sweetest pairings in the show's history.
  • However, fans were not discouraged, hoping that the feelings between the two characters would be rekindled.
  • Sadly, our expectations seem to have been in vain, as the executive producer noted that the new season will not be based on a love triangle.

For a decade, When Calls the Heart has been one of Hallmark viewers' favorite shows. Lovable characters, perfect casting, gorgeous costumes, and tons of romantic content that made us blush as intensely as the main character surrounded by fraternal Mounties and stylish 1910s businessmen. This continued until the fateful day of October 15, 2023, when the final episode of Season 10, titled Starry Nights, was released.

WCTH fans will probably never forgive the writers for making the crucial decision to part ways with Elizabeth and Lucas, who had some of the best chemistry on television and were about to get married. All of this led to even more controversy and discussion from both Lucas' team and their rivals, Team Nathan. The show's co-creator has shed some light on what's in store for the characters in the upcoming Season 11, and unfortunately for one side, the news could be quite devastating.

The Heartbreaking Season 10 Cliffhanger

The final episode of Season 10 had enough crazy twists and cliffhangers to make us wonder: What on earth was that?

First of all, let's not forget that Hope Valley left behind one of its most, if not the most, complex characters, Henry, who went from a cynical villain responsible for the tragedy in the coal mines to a compassionate man who became Goldie's godfather. Will he ever return?

Of course, that's not what fans are most concerned about, but what lies ahead for Elizabeth and Lucas. Few liked another crazy emotional twist when Elizabeth, having decided to call off her engagement to Lucas (with their previous talk of dreams simply invalidated), began to reconsider her feelings for Nathan. She suddenly gave Lucas the cold shoulder, and uncharacteristically, being sensible and mature, prostrated herself before Mountie.

And of course, the final cliffhanger, which suggested that something terrible had happened to Lucas in Capitol City, was the last straw for many fans. Now we just have to hope that the character won't be written out of the script altogether. Especially considering the opinion of the series' co-creator.

A Definitive Answer to Elizabeth's Final Choice

At least now we know one thing: Elizabeth will not be involved in another wacky switcheroo of feelings. But that's not good news, as the show's executive producer and co-creator Brian Bird shared that Elizabeth and Lucas may be splitting up once and for all.

'Her whole life is here. Her whole world is here. And for Lucas, he's always been bound for a bigger stage,' Bird explained. 'From the very first day he arrived in Hope Valley, you could tell this was a guy bound for something bigger in his life. So, if you're following those two threads independently, this is where it went. And this is where it's going.'

Naturally, what makes people alive is their actions, which are far from always rational, and Elizabeth's decision makes her a vivid and believable character.

'None of our lives goes in a straight line,' Bird said of Elizabeth's seemingly irrational decision, noting that such plot twists don't 'always make everybody happy.'

Still, this is incredibly disappointing news for Team Lucas. More importantly, it looks like we won't have to hold our breath for a reunion, because according to Bird, Season 11 won't be about the love triangle.

'We don't want to go there,' he shared. 'You know, sometimes love triangles are things that are manufactured in storytelling.'

Well, for what it's worth, hopefully the writers don't resurrect Jack. Season 11 will premiere on April 7, 2024.
