An underrated gem you all have to check out.

Summary:

  • Cop drama is a very popular genre among viewers.
  • The Shield is a 2002 show that the fans of everything crime related need to check out.
  • The amazing storylines and powerful writing makes this show a must see.

If you watched Blue Bloods and it made you believe you know everything about cop dramas, think again. Turns out, there are police shows that portray the Reagan-level drama much more realistically.

For example, one of the most underrated shows of the 2000s is The Shield, released in 2002. From the first episode you realize that this series is so much more than you ever expected from a TV series about police.

The series is set in LA and revolves around several cops who were in many ways considered a disgrace for the profession. We get introduced to Vic Mackey and his strike team, as well as detectives Wyms, Wagenbach, and the boss, Aceveda, as we delve into their dirty lives and cases.

The Shield is also one of the first antihero shows where the main characters force you to root for them no matter how incriminated and out of the law they are.

“The magic of the show is that you cheer for the Strike Team, even after the first episode explicitly sets up the fact that they are corrupt murderers. You cheer so hard, in fact, that you feel guilty in retrospect, and that is something most anti-heroes can't pull off,” Redditor Dash_Harber said.

From the start, you understand that they are willing to do anything to succeed in their morally questionable schemes: they would steal from one gang and give to another, they would even kill if necessary.

Not your dream type of cop, right? Still, to be fair, some of their dirty deals turn out to be done for good.

The series is an action-packed drama that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very last episode. The show lasted for seven seasons and ended in 2008, leaving a strange aftertaste.

So in case you’re already looking for something fresh after Blue Bloods inevitably ends following its 14-season run, The Shield is available to stream on Hulu.
