This Starz Sci-Fi Series With 100% on Tomatometer Is the Best Show to Watch After Dark
For those who love mind-bending mysteries.
One thing that brings so many viewers to sci-fi movies and TV shows is that pretty much anything can happen anytime and change the way the plot goes. Science fiction makes us believe in the unbelievable, expand our minds and test our imaginations. And even when we’re sure of all the rules that the universe has established, there are always more twists to come.
Even those diehard fans of the genre who have seen pretty much every single TV show and movie would agree that there are very few pieces that can beat Netflix ’s Dark. However, this one Starz channel’s sci-fi thriller is sure to make a strong competition.
Is Counterpart Worth Watching?
Starring J.K. Simmons as Howard Silk, Counterpart is a show about a seemingly unimportant guy who finds himself in the middle of a multi-dimensional mystery. Silk is a gentle, quiet, and obedient worker who has spent 30 years doing one job: exchanging messages that don't seem to make much sense to a casual worker like him.
He's not happy with his life and doesn't feel important enough in his own job. What he doesn't know is the fact of the existence of parallel Earths with access to the Alpha and Prime worlds, where his counterparts also exist. And they're not as shy and insecure as he is in his current reality.
Even though there are only two seasons of the show, it's more than enough to keep you thinking about it long after it's over. Though it has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, there is an obvious characteristic to Counterpart that is very similar to the struggle of many Dark viewers. The deeper the show goes, the harder it is to follow.
Why Was Counterpart Canceled?
Unfortunately for all viewers, Counterpart was canceled after its first two seasons, despite receiving praise from both critics and viewers. The network's problem is the audience the show attracted. Starz was trying to fit its content into a new strategy, and Counterpart couldn't be a part of it.
Starz COO Jeffrey Hirsch had this to say about the cancellation:
“Counterpart was a great show, we had great partners in MRC and Justin is a great writer, but it was a very complicated show, a very male show. We had picked that show up and made a two season commitment before we’d honed in on this premium female strategy.”
If you're looking for a show with a relatable lead and clever writing that can surprise you over and over again with a plethora of twists, Counterpart is a perfect choice. You can get this sci-fi gem on Amazon Prime Video or Apple TV.
