This Clever Easter Egg in Wednesday Will Surprise You
Wednesday has already made a few nods to the previous Addams family movie adaptations, but have you noticed this subtle reference to 1991's The Addams Family?
In the critically acclaimed Netflix show, Morticia's Nevermore Academy yearbook makes an appearance, and we find out that Wednesday 's mom is a 1991 graduate.
Let's do the math, shall we?
Wednesday is 15 years old at the beginning of the show (in 2022), and if we assume that Morticia graduated in 1991 when she was 18 (give or take, the standard age for high school graduation in the US), that makes her about 49 years old in the first episode.
Catherine Zeta-Jones, who plays Morticia on the show, is actually 53 now, so it all fits and is entirely feasible.
However, 1991 as the year of Morticia's graduation was probably chosen not only to make the math math, but it is also the year that The Addams Family movie (one of the more recent successful adaptations) came out.
Isn't that a clever reference? Only the hardcore Addams fans have noticed!
It is not the only Easter egg, though. The biggest nod to the movie is Christina Ricci herself.
In the 1991 remake and its 1993 sequel, the actress famously portrays Wednesday Addams, who all of us millennials fell in love with and resonated with back in our goth era (don't tell me you didn't have one, we know that you did).
In Wednesday, Ricci changes things up a bit and plays Laurel Gates / Marilyn Thornhill (the main villain) for the entirety of the first season (well, at 43 she is too old to make a comeback as teen Wednesday – even by Hollywood's standards).
Will we see more 1990s adaptation Easter eggs in the highly anticipated season 2? Hopefully!
Wednesday can become a shining example of how to recycle old stories into quality reboots and/or remakes for everyone (you know, without the only change being the main character's race or sexuality).
Disney, you know that we are looking at you, take note.
