How a simple misunderstanding nearly ruined careers.

Back in 2009, when The Vampire Diaries was just beginning to make its mark, a peculiar incident involving some of its main cast members made headlines, with them being reportedly arrested for a rather scandalous act.

Back in August 2009, on a regular day, a bunch of drivers started freaking out because they spotted some women hanging off the side of a bridge on a road overpass.

But they weren't just any women; they were the future stars of the soon-to-be hit series, The Vampire Diaries, — Nina Dobrev, Sara Canning, Kayla Ewell, and Candice Accola (now King). Witnesses claimed that the women were allegedly flashing their chests to the passing drivers.

Upon investigation, the police found the actresses along with photographer Tyler Shields. They went through his camera and spotted loads of shots of the ladies striking different poses on the bridge. As a result, all of them were arrested and slapped with disorderly conduct.

While the incident was blown out of proportion by the media, Kayla Ewell, who portrayed Vicky Donovan on the show, clarified during an interview with Entertainment Weekly that the situation was highly exaggerated.

Ewell said that they would never engage in such behavior. "The only thing that’s flashing is our camera,” she added.

14 years after the incident, Carina Adly MacKenzie, a writer for The Vampire Diaries’ spinoff The Originals, shed more light on the situation on X (formerly known as Twitter). According to her, the actresses were merely doing a photoshoot for a friend on the bridge.

The supposed "flashing" reported by drivers was just the camera's flash, which was misunderstood by the police officer. She also mentioned that the actresses weren't hanging from the bridge but were just hanging out on it.

Given that Nina and Sara had just received their work visas for the show, they were well aware of the legal implications and would never jeopardize their careers.

So, it turned out to be just a big misunderstanding. Luckily, it didn’t ruin any careers, and we had a great time watching The Vampire Diaries.
