The Vampire Diaries Fans Still Aren’t Over Delena’s Biggest Crime Against Humanity
Not that they have a lacking criminal history.
Summary:
- The Vampire Diaries was one of The CW’s biggest supernatural TV series hits during its run from 2009 to 2017.
- Though the show is still beloved by many, old school fans agree that it hasn’t aged well and wouldn’t be as popular in the 2020s.
- One of the most traumatic episodes of the show, for example, was ruined by the constant focus on the protagonist, Elena Gilbert.
If you were a fan of The Vampire Diaries back when it was a weekly show, you need to get at least a few hours of mandatory free therapy, because this show was a lot to take in. Based on the novel series by L.J. Smith, the show took both the supernatural horror and relationship drama aspects to a whole new level.
Though many viewers who aren't afraid to revisit the show now look at main protagonist Elena Gilbert through the prism of life experience and can forgive her a good portion of all her missteps, some crimes are harder to forget. The Elena-centrism of the traumatic episode with Alaric and Jo's wedding is one of them.
The Vampire Diaries Jo’s Death
There were a lot of moments that made fans gasp, but the bloody murder of Jo right at the altar as she was about to make her final vows to her future husband, Alaric, is the one that sticks in the back of every viewer's mind. It was painful to watch, and just as painful to watch again, but for a whole new reason.
As one fan on the r/TheVampireDiaries subreddit pointed out, this episode marks Damon and Elena's most heinous crime of the entire series. As the best man and maid of honor, they stalled the entire wedding in order to have an intimate moment at the worst possible time.
Knowing all the stress that comes with weddings, this one was destined to go wrong even before the murder of the bride, having these two as part of the ceremony. But their worst moment didn't stop there. Jo's literal corpse was abandoned as attention was drawn to... You guessed it, Elena Gilbert.
“They really had to make it about her when Jo was dying on her Wedding day while being pregnant, and no one even care to check on Alaric They just leave him THERE alone,” Redditor ishigamisan pointed out in the same thread.
Unfortunately, this messy moment is far from The Vampire Diaries' last annoying one, so if you were planning on revisiting the show, think again. Chances are, as an adult, you won't find it as enjoyable as you did more than a decade ago.
However, if you are certain that you want to embark on this rewatching journey, go ahead and stream The Vampire Diaries on Peacock TV or Max.
