The Vampire Diaries can undoubtedly be considered the best vampire show of all time. But how different is it from the L. J. Smith novels it is based on?

The Vampire Diaries ’ Damon Salvatore is a controversial character. At first the older brother acts like a notorious villain, but over time he evolves and becomes a fan favorite.

In the show and the books, the description of his appearance is almost identical, but almost everything else is different.

1. Damon is stronger in the books

In the show, vampires are literally super beings – they are strong, fast, and can control humans’ thoughts. In the books, however, vampires are even stronger. For example, Book-Damon has the power to control the weather, telepathy, and the ability to fly.

In the first episode, a hint of Damon's "weather" abilities is shown when he sends the fog to the cemetery where Elena arrives. However, we never saw any further development of this ability.

2. Damon from the books is not a womanizer at all

Show-Damon has had affairs with Katherine, Elena, Isobel, Rebekah, Rose, and Lexi. And the list goes on and on.

In the books, Damon spends most of his time with Elena and Bonnie and not interested in other affairs.

3. Damon is much older in the books

According to the plot of the show, Damon was born in 1839 and turned into a vampire in 1864. This means that when the main story begins, Damon is over 150 years old.

However, this is nothing compared to his age in the books. Damon in the books was born during the Renaissance, which makes him over 500 years old.

4. Damon is supposed to be Italian

Book-Damon was not only born in the Renaissance – he was Italian himself. He and Stefan were born in Italy and lived there for a long time, which is why they have such a last name. In the show, the brothers were born in the US, right in Mystic Falls.

5. Book Damon is much more violent

The show's Damon quickly became a favorite of the fans, even with all the malice. But in the books, the vampire is much more evil, and his cruelty is off the charts.

For example, when Elena does not allow Damon into her room, the vampire begins to threaten her little sister Margaret, which is a pretty questionable move for a fan favorite.
