One character who didn't stay true to himself.

Summary:

  • Supernatural was The CW hit fantasy horror that lasted for 15 seasons.
  • The show followed Sam and Dean Winchester, two brothers who traveled around the country, fighting demons.
  • The final resolution for Sam Winchester’s character didn’t match his ambition at the beginning of the show.

When the show runs for more than a decade, fans can forgive the writers for some inconsistencies. After all, everything tends to change, and the characters' motivations, ambitions, and general outlook on life are no exception.

The important thing is to make the finale meaningful for the character. Unfortunately for all Supernatural fans, the show failed Sam Winchester in this regard.

Although the main point of criticism at the release of the final episode had more to do with the crazy aging makeup than the story itself, the more fans look back, the less they like the way Sam's story was presented. Instead of doing him justice, the writers completely erased his character's origins.

Sam Winchester Deserved a Better Ending

From the very beginning of the show, we know Sam's true interest in life: he wants to be a lawyer. He was working toward that goal from the very beginning, before his life was shattered by the murder of his girlfriend.

While that event was the catalyst for all the adventures to come, for which we as viewers are truly grateful, it was never Sam's intention to remain a part of the hunting life forever. He took every opportunity he saw to settle down, and almost succeeded in his quest when he left Dean for dead in season 8.

Although it wasn't the case at the time, and the show moved on as soon as his brother got out of Purgatory, it definitely should have been the subject of Sam's personal finale in season 15. Even if the writers decided not to spend a second on whether or not his dream of becoming a lawyer came true, they could have given him a chance to escape the life of a hunter.

But even that was not completely fulfilled, as in one of the last frames the viewer sees Sam's son, Dean, with a clear anti-possession tattoo. As much as everyone would like to believe that Sam could have lived his quiet, happy human life while his son hunted demons in honor of his uncle, in the Supernatural universe it's an almost impossible case.

Whether you enjoyed the Supernatural finale the way it was, or prefer to forget that it even exists and believe in your own headcanon instead, you can always go back to season 1. The series is available to stream on Netflix.
