The Real Reason Behind Supernatural’s Season 15 Ending, Revealed by Ackles & Padalecki
They had all the power.
One of the shows that made The CW as popular as it was until the recent changes was Supernatural. Launched in 2005, the show quickly gained an army of fans around the world and became the pinnacle of the careers of its two stars.
Despite the fact that Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles, who portrayed Sam and Dean Winchesters on the show, eventually made the decision to leave, Supernatural will forever remain a very unique chapter in their acting experience. Even the way they decided to end the show's run is not a story you hear often from other sets.
Why Did Supernatural End on Season 15?
Even though Padalecki didn't get much of a say in his last show, Walker, which was canceled along with many others after The CW's rebranding, it wasn't always the case. Looking back on his time on both Gilmore Girls and Supernatural, the actor realizes how much power his voice actually had.
Speaking to TVLine about the next chapter in his career, Jared Padalecki revealed that he and co-star Jensen Ackles were the ones who ultimately pulled the trigger on Supernatural's season 15 finale:
“With Supernatural, Jensen and I talked about it in our trailers on set for years, or during conventions in the green room, or at home, or flying together, or whatever, playing golf. <...> So we met with [CW President] Mark Pedowitz and said, like, “Hey, we’re going to do Season 15, but that’s it.” So we had a couple years, and we, ultimately, made the decision.”
While there are many people who would have disagreed with this decision if they were in control, at this point Supernatural was ultimately in the hands of its leads. Without one of the Winchester brothers, there would have been no way to continue, so it's for the best that the actors were able to cooperate on this tough decision.
By ending Supernatural after season 15, Ackles and Padalecki spared the show, which had gone on for far too long at that point. Though some believe it was a fair decision to continue the story after creator Eric Kripke's departure, extending it beyond 15 seasons would have put it in a soap opera box.
For now, though, the Internet is abuzz with rumors and fan pleas for a reunion season. Until that is officially confirmed, you are always welcome to re-watch Supernatural by streaming it on Netflix.
