The OA Has Long Been Canceled, But Fans Just Refuse to Give Up on It

One of the most prominent TV series of the 21st century, the sci-fi drama The OA, was canceled after its second season. And this is probably the worst decision made by Netflix since the adaptation of Winx Club.

The show, created by Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij, is about a blind girl named Prairie who returns to her hometown after a mysterious seven-year absence. As the case unfolds, it is revealed that she has been held captive by a mad scientist who studies near-death experiences. Prairie gathers a group of people around her and initiates them into the mystery of her life, which she was able to comprehend after her clinical death.

The OA Still Remains Netflix’s Main Hidden Gem

Unfortunately, The OA remained a hidden gem of the Netflix collection – few people watched the series, but those who did were extremely enthusiastic. Critics called it the Twin Peaks of a new generation, but the ratings decided everything. The sad thing is that by the end of the second season, Marling and Batmanglij already had material for new stories they were dying to tell.

The OA was one of the most unusual shows of the last decade, a rare auteur project that the creators were not afraid to transform from season to season. The first was filmed as a modest independent film about a missing blind girl who regained her sight, the second as an expensive science fiction and detective story about alternate universes.

The creators planned to release five seasons, each telling about a new universe. The third one, as you can guess from the end of the second one, would take place in our world or a version very similar to it.

The OA, apparently, will take the pedestal of Utopia and Firefly in the title of the most undeservedly closed series.

The OA Fans Are Still Doing Everything They Can to Revive The Show

However, even five years after the show's cancellation, fans of The OA haven't given up – and that's admirable. Perhaps the most major incident occurred in 2019, when one of the fans took decisive action against the show's cancellation – he went on a hunger strike near Netflix headquarters. However, even such radical measures did not force Netflix executives to reconsider their decision.

Now fans are collecting votes on a petition for the renewal of the third season of The OA, which already has more than 115 thousand votes. Although some fans doubt the effectiveness of this campaign, it is worth noting that fans have repeatedly saved their favorite series with their own hands.

TV Series Have Been Saved Numerous Times by Fans

For example, when Jericho was canceled after its first season due to low ratings, an ambitious and daring fan campaign was launched in hopes of convincing CBS to reverse its decision. Loyal viewers took to message boards to come up with a plan and ended up sending more than 40,000 pounds of nuts to the network to get their attention.

The idea came from one of the characters who refused to surrender the city in the finale, shouting “Nuts!”. The fan campaign worked, and Jericho got a second and final season.
