The Hunger Games Franchise & 8 More Films to Leave Netflix by the End of May
It didn’t stay for long enough.
While it may feel like The Hunger Games franchise just arrived on Netflix, it will be leaving the streamer at the end of the month. The story of Katniss Everdeen starting a true revolution in the dystopian world and leading it to victory has captivated young adult viewers for more than 10 years now, but it will soon have to find another home.
On May 31, all of the films in The Hunger Games franchise will be removed from Netflix. But that fate awaits more movies than that. Here are 8 other movies you might want to watch before the end of the month, before they're gone from your subscription.
Where the Crawdads Sing (2022) – May 11
Coming-of-age murder mystery starring Normal People’s Daisy Edgar-Jones will be leaving the platform in just a couple of days. So, if you want to give a story of a young girl, who raised herself but ended up being the main suspect for the murder a go, make sure to stream Where the Crawdads Sing on Netflix tonight.
Fifty Shades of Black (2016) – May 14
Not every movie ever added to Netflix is good. In fact, some of them have a Rotten Tomatoes rating so bad that you have to wonder if you need to watch them at all. Fifty Shades of Black, a comedy with only a 4% rating on Rotten Tomatoes that will be released on May 14, is certainly a wild ride, but it might at least make for a great hate-watch.
The Boxtrolls (2014) – May 22
This animated movie ticks all the boxes for a nice family movie. It stars great actors like Ben Kingsley, Isaac Hempstead Wright, and Elle Fanning, has an interesting premise that sets up a great adventure, and is suitable for both kids and adults. Unfortunately, the decade-old movie will be leaving Netflix on Wednesday, May 22.
2012 (2009) – May 31
Remember how we all bought into the prophecy that the world would end in 2012? Even though it didn't happen, there are plenty of pop culture references made for us to look back on the mass hysteria. The disaster movie 2012, starring John Cusack, is one of them. Is it the best disaster movie yet? Not at all. But it is a fun piece of media to look back on.
Boyz n the Hood (1991) – May 31
With a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Boyz n the Hood is the 90's movie to watch if you want to get a better understanding of black neighborhoods in the US at that time. Caught between the need to survive and their own morals, young people tended to fall into a life of crime and couldn't find a way back.
Burlesque (2010) – May 31
Starring such music legends as Christina Aguilera and Cher, Burlesque may not be the best take on the familiar Moulin Rouge story, but it is a fun and very musical movie to watch to get in the mood. So, if you don't mind characters breaking into songs and want to see something breathtakingly sparkly and beautiful, this movie is a great choice.
The Choice (2016) – May 31
If you are craving more romance, The Choice may be just the movie to satisfy your cravings. Based on Nicholas Sparks' 2007 novel of the same name, the film follows two neighbors who fall in love upon their first meeting. Although critics panned the film, giving it an 11% on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences were much more receptive, giving the film a 61% rating.
The Great Gatsby (2013) – May 31
Based on the 1925 novel by American author F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby is one of Leonardo DiCaprio 's most popular roles, although the film itself has not been highly acclaimed by critics. However, the A-list cast, gorgeous costumes, and well-crafted production make The Great Gatsby an enjoyable watch.
