You can trust no one in this series.

Summary:

  • Susie Glass, portrayed by Kaya Scodelario, is a weed empress in Netflix 's new series The Gentlemen
  • She is the one who makes sure Eddie doesn't get out of the criminal business he happened to inherit
  • While helping the Duke and mentoring him in the criminal world, Glass also doesn't shy away from occasionally lying and manipulating him
  • However, one particular deception has been overlooked by everyone - including Eddie Horniman himself.

Netflix's The Gentlemen has a lot of things you can love it for: from oh so many Guy Ritchie references to, well, Guy Ritchie to the magnetic enemies-to-lovers-oh-sorry-business-partners dynamic between Theo James' Eddie Horniman and Kaya Scodelario's Susie Glass.

Let's talk about the latter, shall we? However, do hesitate to read further unless you're fine with spoilers for The Gentlemen TV series that will follow soon.

It's always fun to watch two strong characters toying with their chemistry that blossoms as they struggle to decide whether they are partners or lovers. In The Gentlemen, that's exactly what happens between Eddie and Susie; while Eddie wants out of the criminal business he discovered on his land (and we believe it from the bottom of our hearts), he is clearly driven by the new endeavors and the woman who helps him execute them.

And what's not to love? Susie is a clever criminal strategist with impeccable manners that do not prevent her from occasionally having someone killed or manipulated out of her way. However, she clearly fancies the young aristocrat who doesn't mind getting his hands dirty and babysits him as he makes his first step in the world of drug trade. It's almost like he can trust her... right?

Yeah, well. The rest of the show proves that no, he can't, but it seems that the rules of the game are pretty clear to both of them, and Eddie and Susie meet the season finale as partners in crime, literally. However, did we all forget that time Susie stole 2 million from Eddie and never even felt sorry?

Flashback to the incident with Jethro — an unfortunate witness of a murder of a drug lord committed by Eddie's brother, Freddie. Eddie decided he wanted to spare the kid and send him off to Australia with money while framing him for the said murder. Susie pretended she was on board with the idea; however, later in the show we realize she still had Jethro killed because he was clearly going to be a problem.

When Eddie found out, he was understandably angry, but rather about Susie lying to him and killing the kid, and not about the 2 million she conveniently "earned" by getting rid of Jethro.

The fact that the Duke didn't seem to care about the money has puzzled fans. However, some people think that it's not about Eddie being dumb — rather about him being a true gentlemen who cared more about an innocent life than money (which is pretty ironic if you watch the entire show).

"He was more pissed that they killed an innocent child - the Duke is a simple man he’s not into the title nor greedy for wealth," noted Redditor Successful_Thinker8.

Still, kudos to miss Glass for not only handling the problem before it could even become an issue but also saving some money for the family business! For a drug empress, she's a true keeper.

If you want to make your own mind about Susie Glass' trustworthiness and Eddie Horniman's benevolence, The Gentlemen is available for streaming on Netflix.
