It’s a 15-year-long love story.

While Supernatural may be one of the most recognizable TV shows ever, thanks to its unique premise and the involvement of all kinds of creatures and demons, it also did a great job of making its characters stand out.

From the two Winchester brothers, to the connoisseur of trench coats, Castiel, the sarcastic Crowley, the writers made sure their characters had their own quirks and fun details. Some of those details, however, were the work of the actors, not the writers' room.

For example, Jensen Ackles, who portrayed Dean Winchester, was the mastermind behind the idea of Dean being a huge foodie.

Dean Winchester’s Best Improv Moment

Having a soft spot for all kinds of unhealthy snacks must be one of Dean Winchester's most recognizable attributes from the show. We know he loves his Baby Impala, his AC/DC and Led Zeppelin, and of course his greasy diners on the side of the road. Unlike his brother, Dean will never pass up an opportunity to eat a good burger.

Of course, as was only revealed a few episodes later, Dean's attachment to food stems from the lack of it he experienced as a child when he gave the last of it to Sam to keep him alive and well. But even this beautifully heartbreaking detail about the brothers' shared past could never have come to life if it weren't for Jensen Ackles.

According to the actor himself, it all started back in season 1 when he improvised a cocktail sausage snack during the filming of the episode Nightmare (S1E14). The idea of Dean's inability to stay away from food was so true to his character that the writers kept it going for 14 more seasons.

“The eating of the cocktail sausages at the person’s house in the first season then peeled back the layer of Dean’s affinity towards food,” Ackles explained to Entertainment Weekly.

Though Dean's love of food was never a central element of any of the stories told on the show, it was a nice added detail that rounded out his character and made him that much more likeable and relatable.

If you miss the Winchester brothers and want to join them on the adventure of ridding the land of all manner of demons, you can stream Supernatural seasons 1 through 15 on Netflix.
