Eric Draven is more than ready to take revenge one more time.

Summary:

  • The remake of the 1994 cult classic The Crow spent many years in production hell, with numerous directors and candidates for the role of Eric Draven.
  • The movie could have been directed by Stephen Norrington, Juan Carlos Fresnadillo and Francisco Javier Gutierrez, and the role of Eric could have been played by Bradley Cooper and Jason Momoa.
  • In 2022, Rupert Sanders was hired to direct, Bill Skarsgård to play Eric, and FKA Twigs to play Eric's bride.
  • The remake of The Crow is scheduled to be released on June 7, 2024.

In 1994, The Crow was released, telling the story of Eric Draven, who was killed along with his bride the day before their wedding. A year later, Eric raised from the dead to take revenge on the people responsible for the death of his beloved.

The movie had a lot of merits, but unfortunately became famous mainly due to an accident that occurred during its production – the lead actor Brandon Lee was shot and killed on the set due to the negligence of the props. Out of respect for Brandon's work, director Alex Proyas decided to finish filming and release the movie.

The Crow Remake Was in Production Hell For Decades

In 2008, director Stephen Norrington, who once gave us Blade, announced that he would write and direct a reboot of The Crow, turning the gothic tale into a realistic, almost detective story.

In 2011, Norrington abandoned the idea. Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, known to most viewers as the director of 28 Weeks Later, took the helm and had his own vision for the film – he saw Bradley Cooper in the main role. Due to rights issues, the film was delayed and Cooper was unavailable due to his busy schedule.

In October 2011, Fresnadillo left the project and Francisco Javier Gutierrez became the new director. After that, nothing was heard about the film, but in 2013, information about negotiations with actors for the role of Eric Draven began to appear in the press again – the names of Tom Hiddleston, Alexander Skarsgård and Luke Evans were mentioned.

By then, fans of The Crow had already decided that the movie was cursed and would never leave the production hell, and even James O'Barr (the original comic book writer) expressed doubts that the remake, if it ever came out, would be able to top the 1994 version.

Jason Momoa Almost Played Eric Draven

In 2016, Corin Hardy became the film's new director, and the role of Eric Draven went to Jason Momoa. But the production was once again frozen as multiple studios fought over the rights to pick up the project. In 2018, Momoa and Hardy left the movie, citing creative differences with the producers.

The Crow’s Cast and Crew

It felt like a movie destined to die, but let's not forget that The Crow is a story about how love can bring someone back from the dead. In April 2022, fans received good news: the remake of The Crow will still take place.

It will be directed by Rupert Sanders, Eric will be portrayed by Bill Skarsgård, and his bride will be played by British singer FKA Twigs.

Comic book writer James O'Barr is still listed as a creative consultant on the film, and has previously promised to ensure that the new movie is an adaptation that respects the spirit of the original.

The Crow’s Release Date

Filming wrapped up in September 2022, and the release date has just recently been announced – the remake of The Crow is set to hit theaters on June 7, 2024.

Of course, the gothic aesthetic isn't as popular today as it was in 1994, but the success of Matt Reeves' The Batman proves that viewers still love movies about sad-faced vigilantes with black mascara all over their faces.
