Winchesters’ genes are running strong.

Summary:

  • Supernatural was The CW horror fantasy show that followed the Winchester brothers in their battle against demonic forces.
  • The brothers had a difficult relationship with both of their parents, with their father John being particularly abusive and neglectful.
  • When John was possessed by a demon, he acted much nicer to Dean than he normally would.
  • The same thing happened with Sam and Dean when they were possessed and went to Kevin.

There is no doubt that the Winchester family was not an example of a strong parent-child bond. The only ounce of familial love shown to the audience is the brotherly love between Dean and Sam, who fight for each other and put each other before themselves to the very end.

This love was the only thing that could carry them through so many dangers and adventures, and this love was the thing that gave Sam a way to continue his life after his brother's death. He was able to grow old, have children, and maybe even live away from the hunt for a while.

Many viewers seem to put the Winchester brothers on a pedestal compared to their parents. In reality, however, both are involved in the same very gray area of hunting, and both tend to be less than kind to those they deem weak, for one reason or another.

Dean and Sam Parallel to John Winchester

When John is possessed in Devil's Trap (S1E22), he starts acting much nicer to Dean than he ever has before. While it is obvious that the demon has to act all nice in order to gain the brothers' trust and not let them win, the moment of realization is still heartbreaking to watch.

The only thing that gave Azazel away was the fact that John was never that nice to Dean, and he knew for sure that he never would be. The lack of fatherly love was the very thing that helped Dean see the truth.

However, this painful lesson did not seem to teach Dean and Sam anything about respect and kindness, because years later they found themselves in exactly John's place. In the episode The Great Escapist (S8E21), possessed, they show up at Kevin Tran's with Crowley's piece of the Demon Tablet for translation. It doesn't take long for Kevin to see the trap.

The real Sam and Dean never treated him with much respect and courtesy, so just like Dean from the very first season, Kevin realizes that it couldn't have been them.

As unfortunate as it is, Kevin is later killed by the possessed Sam. Many viewers still consider him one of the characters who deserved a much better exit. However, if you enjoyed his run and want to watch it again, you can stream Supernatural on Netflix.
