If you thought SpongeBob was just about a quirky sponge, you will be really shocked.

SpongeBob SquarePants is a unique animated series. Being so lighthearted and playful, the beloved cartoon still managed to ignite hundreds of speculation, theories and controversies.

One crazy theory has left fans questioning everything they thought they knew about this underwater world and its quirky inhabitants. This theory takes one of the most unusual and trippiest episodes of SpongeBob SquarePants and turns it into something deeply unsettling.

This theory revolves around the episode titled SB-129, and it's not for the faint of heart. In this 14th episode of season 1, Squidward tries to escape SpongeBob and Patrick's antics by hiding in the freezer. But he ends up getting trapped there and wakes up 2,000 years later.

After meeting Spongetron, robotic SpongeBob from the future, Squidward uses a time machine to teleport back in time. Eventually, he ends up in a realm called Nowhere.

This is where things get dark. The fan theory suggests that Nowhere isn't just a random place; it's Purgatory. In many religious traditions, particularly within Christianity, Purgatory is a sort of in-between realm where souls go to be cleansed of their sins before entering Heaven.

This place is completely empty, much like how Purgatory is described. There's no water, and the atmosphere is eerie with haunting, echoing voices. The theory also explains that voices could represent lost souls, and the colored elements might be spirits of the dead inhabitants of Bikini Bottom.

What's truly unsettling is the possibility that Squidward met his demise during the time machine's malfunction. The idea is that his soul busted loose and ended up in Purgatory.

Should he remain there, he would endure anguish, potentially struggling with the deprivation of water, a predicament that might lead to suffocation.

But how did he escape? The theory proposes that the time machine had a mind of its own and zapped him back to a point when he was still alive.

However, the Squidward that returns isn't the exact same Squidward; it's a slightly younger version, fated to put up with SpongeBob and Patrick's high jinks forever.
