From her early days in Barney & Friends, through Wizards of Waverly Place and several hit singles, the career of Selena Gomez has certainly been a varied one.

But did you know she was once offered a role on The Big Bang Theory? And that, had it happened, it would have been written especially for her?

However, the star (who is a self-confessed fan of the show and a bit of a fangirl for Sheldon Cooper) turned down the part due to other commitments.

At the time she was offered the role of Amy's sister, Gomez had a full schedule and was unable to pull herself away from it for the chance to perform a small role in one of her favourite comedy shows.

This story was revealed in the 2022 book written by Jessica Radloff, The Big Bang Theory: The Definitive, Inside Story of the Epic Hit Series.

In the book, she details how the showrunners were keen for Gomez to play Amy's step-sister – a girl hated by Amy (Mayim Bialik), but in truth just a beautiful human being who everybody would love.

The one-off episode that would have featured a guest appearance by Selena Gomez was the brainchild of Steve Molaro. And it came about after a 2016 Instagram post from Gomez in which she revealed her love for the show.

Molaro said he came up with the idea that Amy was constantly complaining about her b**ch of a step-sister. But when viewers came to meet her, it would turn out that she was lovely and Amy was just jealous.

The role was conceived specifically with Selena Gomez in mind and the idea of the onscreen dynamic between her and Bialik is certainly intriguing. But with the various schedules of all those involved never quite in synergy, it wasn't to be.

The writers then went in a completely different direction with Amy's family life – deciding that her parents were still together and there was no step-sister anyway – and the role was consigned to the 'maybe not' pile.

While the idea is one that most fans probably feel would have worked pretty well, alas it's not something that will ever come to fruition now.

But, let's be honest, as much as it would have made a nice little cameo, both the show and Selena Gomez have gotten on just fine without this collaboration going ahead.
