Young Gibbs was already featured in the original show, but the upcoming spinoff opted for someone else.

NCIS ’ rule-breaking spinoff titled NCIS: Origins already has everything set up for its premiere this October, but some fans still seem to be concerned about the lead actor the future show had chosen back in the day.

Taking its viewers back in time, the series will now focus entirely on the earlier years of Leroy Jethro Gibbs who is now portrayed by Austin Stowell, yet many of those who have been with the original show for quite some time may remember that younger Gibbs, once played by another actor, has already entered the scene.

Who Played Young Gibbs on NCIS?

However, the question that kept everyone wondering didn’t take too long to get an answer. Since NCIS already gave a sneak peek into Gibbs’ past by introducing flashbacks a couple of times, it seemed like the franchise had secured itself the younger character’s actor for the upcoming spinoff, but that wasn’t the case.

In the original show, young Gibbs was portrayed by Sean Harmon, the son of Mark Harmon who actually played the original character. Talking about the upcoming series that both actors helm as executive producers, Sean revealed that he never even considered reprising his role in some other project in the first place.

According to the actor, “it was an absolute honor to step into the role; it will always be something I’ll hold close to my heart. In truth, I never intended to make a career out of it.”

He also teased NCIS: Origins’ potential storylines suggesting that on the show Gibbs would still be recovering after his wife and daughter had been murdered, and “Gibbs is a guy who has something broken inside, a guy who at one point could have down a darker path.”

Additionally, the actor revealed that the spinoff would leave much more room for resolving all the past mysteries since in NCIS: Origins the character would have to deal with his trauma without having a single answer to his numerous questions.

NCIS: Origins is set to premiere on October 14 on CBS.
