Riverdale Star Opens Up about the Impact of 7-Year-Long Online Hate
Being a target for so many people at once is not something you can get used to.
While many people dream of fame and fortune, nothing can really prepare you for what comes with it. Back in the days when cell phones could only make calls and send very short texts, tabloids were the ones who speculated on celebrities' lives and thus made them unbearable.
Today, in the modern age of technology, 5G, and free Wi-Fi in just about every place imaginable, it's too easy for any fan or hater to take on the role of a sneaky reporter and start a nasty discussion. If you are working on a show aimed at teenagers and young adults, you can expect the fandom to be as active as possible online.
And that can be both a blessing and a curse.
The stars of Riverdale have always been very grateful and open about their love for all the fans who stick around for the journey that the show has been on. Now, with the final episode of the soap's high school drama on the way, they have time to reflect on both the constructive and not-so-constructive criticism they have received over the years.
Lili Reinhart, who has portrayed Betty Cooper throughout the show's run, shared her thoughts on Riverdale's campiness with Vulture in a group interview:
“People see clips taken out of context [on social media] and are like, ‘What? I thought this was about teenagers.’ And we thought so as well — in season one. But it’s really not been easy to feel that you’re the butt of a joke. We all want to be actors; we’re passionate about what we do. So when the absurdity of our show became a talking point, it was difficult.”
As her co-stars later agreed, the show, based on a comic book, was never meant to be realistic or believable. However, you can imagine that the story, which started out as an ordinary murder investigation and ended up in a completely different timeline, wasn't something the casual viewer expected.
Unfortunately, all journeys must end somewhere, and Riverdale is no exception. Tune in to The CW next Wednesday, August 23, to catch the grand finale of the beloved show.
