Reddit Found an Unexpected Connection Between Schitt's Creek... and Hitchcock Prequel
Bates Motel is a horror thriller series that serves as a "contemporary prequel" to Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho.
Schitt's Creek is a sitcom that tells a story of a filthy rich family that lost everything. How could they possibly have any connection?
Both shows were aired simultaneously, with Bates Motel starting two years prior, which could've implicated that Schitt's Creek could borrow some ideas from it… If not only for the fact that the shows are totally different from each other.
One of them's a comedy, and another one's a horror. But there still are some similarities, as Reddit user Motherliquorguzzler found out.
Rundown motel
This point is really obvious: both shows revolve around rundown motels and the new owners' attempts to revive them. Mind you, both the motels and the owners are very different from each other, but the main idea is still there.
Matters that matter
We see very similar issues in both shows: family struggles and bonding, the importance of community, the specifics of living in a small town…
These issues are not that rare, but keep reading — together with other coincidences, it makes sense.
Eccentric mothers
Both shows have similar main characters: they are both whimsical and eccentric mother figures that are hard to understand for most people around them.
If this wasn't enough, even their names, Norma and Moira, sound somewhat close.
Maybe This Time
Both in Bates Motel and in Schitt's Creek, when the characters wish to reflect on the troubles they've been facing, they perform Cabaret's "Maybe This Time".
Since neither of the shows is a musical, it's a fairly weird coincidence, to say the least.
Jocelyn
Building upon the previous point, in both shows there was a character named Jocelyn who was involved with the musical, and in both Bates Motel and Schitt's Creek she was responsible for casting. It doesn't get more coincidental, does it?
While no one in their right mind would seriously imply that Schitt's Creek copied something from Bates Motel, it's still pretty interesting to notice all these similarities.
We were especially intrigued by the repetition of the musical bits — at least this has to not be a coincidence!
