Pirates of the Caribbean Producer Goes Against Disney, Wants Johnny Depp Back
PotC boss reveals he discussed Johnny Depp’s return with the actor despite Disney’s clear desire to leave the former Pirates star behind.
Let’s be real here: Pirates of the Caribbean hasn’t been the same since the original trilogy’s finale. The last two movies were mediocre at best, but we still watched them, and there was only one reason we did — Johnny Depp ’s Captain Jack Sparrow.
But while Disney stubbornly refuses to use that advantage in its quest to revive the franchise, the Pirates producer Jerry Bruckheimer disagrees.
PotC Boss Wants Johnny Depp Back
The notorious and highly controversial Depp vs. Amber trial locked many doors in front of the Pirates’ star’s face despite him winning in the court. Perhaps the toughest blow for the actor was Disney’s decision to boot him from all the franchises he played in, including Fantastic Beasts and Pirates of the Caribbean.
While Disney is hellbent on keeping Johnny Depp away from its movies, the PotC producer Jerry Bruckheimer hates this situation and admits he would’ve loved to have the actor back for the two new Pirates movies he already has lined up.
“[We’re making] a reboot, but if it was up to me, [Johnny] would be in it. I love him. He’s a good friend. He’s an amazing artist and he’s a unique look. He created Captain Jack. That was not on the page, that was him doing a little Pepé Le Pew and Keith Richards. That was his interpretation of Jack Sparrow,” Bruckheimer told EW.
Bruckheimer Discussed Depp’s Return with Him
In an interview, the Pirates of the Caribbean boss even revealed that he’d talked to Depp about his potential return to the franchise behind Disney’s back.
“I love having Depp. He’s a great actor and good friend… I’ve certainly spoken to him, but we'll see what happens,” he shared with ET, emphasizing that he can’t change the situation.
It looks like at least one person over at Disney fully understands just how devastating of a blow Johnny Depp’s absence will be to the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie. The new version with Margot Robbie might turn out spectacular, but without the quirky rum-guzzling freak of a Captain, the Seven Seas just won’t be the same.
