Now that’s truly gripping.

The shows and movies based on true life stories are always the ones that hit harder than any other features. And it’s easy to understand why: no matter how realistic a fictional story may seem, when you know that it’s something created in someone else's imagination, you feel safe.

But when even a small disturbing story that happened in reality is shown on the screen, it makes you tremble. Now, imagine a show about a serial killer, who took away and also damaged so many lives?

There's an overlooked 2023 British crime drama that revolves around the infamous Yorkshire Ripper murders of the late 70's and early 80's committed by the evil Peter Sutcliffe. The miniseries is called The Long Shadow and is probably the most devastating show of the genre created lately.

The Long Shadow focuses on what the world calls the most notorious and shocking serial killer cases of all time. At the center of the story is the process of searching for Sutcliffe. It lasted for five years and involved literally over a thousand officers.

People say that it was this case that changed the way the British police worked forever, and the series goes all the way through to show the horrific consequences of serial killer’s action.

However, the focus of the series is far from the killer, he himself appears on the screen halfway the course of the show, which has seven episodes. But the main idea of Lewis Arnold, the director, was to show the victims of the misogynistic murders and the way their families suffered.

“The sympathy they showed to the victims, particularly in the first episode, was very much appreciated. It was so refreshing to see them portrayed as more than just “prostitutes”, but as complex women who made difficult decisions for their families,” Redditor Ajf_88 said.

The series scored 86% on Rotten Tomatoes and is a really tough watch. The long Shadow is available to stream on Prime.
