Original Gilmore Girls Showrunner Refuses to Watch S7 Finale, And We Get It
Many of us would prefer to un-see it as well.
No TV series is ever safe from being completely transformed by changes in the cast or crew working behind the cameras. Although networks try to avoid it at all costs, knowing how disruptive these changes can be to viewers, sometimes the conflicts remain unresolved and there are no other options.
While new producers, writers, and showrunners try to maintain the original show's presence for as long as possible, that's not usually what happens in the end. Whether that happened with Gilmore Girls season 7 is subjective, and you can decide for yourself, but the original showrunner who stayed with the show for 6 years is keen on never finishing it.
As unfortunate as it is, Amy Sherman-Palladino's departure didn't go well. The showrunner couldn't come to an agreement with the network about her contract, so that was a big part of her decision to leave.
What's even more unfortunate is that it made it hard for her to enjoy the rest of the show, which she was behind from day one.
Back in 2016, the writer revealed that she hadn't watched season 7 of Gilmore Girls at all, but had been communicating with her friends about it. While it's hard to see the characters you care so much about taken out of your control, there's no way she wouldn't be just as interested in finding out how things ended for Lorelai and Rory on screen.
Sherman-Palladino opened up about the emotional connection she still has to the show at the Television Critics Association summer press tour:
“Nothing against the seventh season, but any writer who was so emotionally connected to something and then pulled out of it is going to find it very hard to go back into that world and not feel like you either want to slit your own wrist and die slowly in a swimming pool, or be angry or be jealous,” she said.
Whether you preferred the show's earlier seasons or were just as happy with its finale, it's worth revisiting it all these years later to see how it holds up. Stream Gilmore Girls on Netflix or Amazon Prime Video.
