Standing up to God must be the most badass thing this show has seen.

If there is one character that was hated by everyone in the Supernatural fandom, it has to be Metatron.

Being the main villain of season 9 of the show made many fans watch the show on the edge of their seats waiting for something terrible to happen.

Despite being an annoying character, everyone agrees that he was one of the most effective villains the show has seen.

He was also the one with the most satisfying redemption arc. Though not everyone would agree that it was well-deserved, considering how much he weakened the angels and how Heaven was never the same after him, everyone loved seeing him meet and challenge God in season 11.

What makes episode 20 of season 11 so good is how the comedy is intertwined with the drama surrounding the character. Curtis Armstrong, who has played Metatron all season, gives what fans consider his best performance.

Metatron is complex: one minute he gives his last chance for food to a stray dog, the next he dares to ask to rejoin the angels.

This complexity makes the scene ten times more tense, but entertaining to watch, and climaxes his character's redemption arc. This is the moment when viewers can see how much Metatron has grown as a person.

His own relationship with God and the change of heart he had towards Chuck is also noteworthy, as it fits perfectly with the new character traits.

The scene shows that Metatron no longer sees God as above reproach, and even dares to call him out, gaining him respect in the eyes of the audience.

This was a prime example of a perfect villain, so smart and manipulative, being disappointed in his own beliefs, and the episode that will forever be one of the top ones in fan ratings.

If you want to see it again, you can stream season 11 of Supernatural, and every other season before it, on Netflix or Max.
