Looks like "the more the merrier" doesn't apply anymore.

Bridgerton has been undisputed ever since it first premiered on Netflix. There are many reasons, but the main one is certainly the cast of the show, along with their storylines.

In spite of the fact that the plot was made up of many equally important narratives, there were still characters whose story was the most significant. Yes, of course it’s the romance of young couple Daphne Bridgerton and Simon Basset.

The whole season was about their blossoming love, and they became real fan favorites. So when it was announced that Regé-Jean Page, who played Simon, wouldn't be returning for season 2 of the show, it caused a lot of discussion and real concern.

Many fans were sure that the show wouldn't survive. Little did they know that they were so wrong. When season 2 aired, it was clear from the beginning that the main storyline would revolve around Anthony Bridgerton and his complicated relationship with the Sharma sisters.

So Simon wasn't really needed there, and in fact Daphne's role was reduced to a minimum. She was in the smallest of scenes, and later on in the season, the writers added her to an important scene of brother-sister bonding.

And even though they made the first season a hit, season 2 was more than capable of becoming even more successful without their input.

On top of that, it was recently announced that Phoebe Dynevor, who played Daphne, will also be leaving the show. The thing is, having Daphne in season 2 was kind of justified because she was important to Anthony and her words meant a lot to him.

But as we already know, season 3 will have a new power couple. It's time to see what kind of future awaits Colin Bridgerton and Penelope Featherington. And frankly, it doesn't look like Daphne will be needed there.

She just doesn't share the same energy with Colin as she did with Anthony. So he won't need her advice or anything.

Thus, it seems that getting rid of characters that are no longer essential to the story is an easy way to create Bridgerton and make it a success without really depending on 1-2 actors and their characters. The show just works on its own.

Bridgerton season 3 release date is yet to be announced, but until then, you can binge two previous seasons, along with the Queen Charlotte spinoff, on Netflix.
