No one does practical effects quite like Christopher Nolan does.

Christopher Nolan, the visionary director behind films like Inception, The Dark Knight Trilogy, and Dunkirk, is known for pushing the boundaries of what is possible in cinema. His latest project, Oppenheimer, set to hit theaters in July 2023, is no exception.

Oppenheimer tells the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the American physicist who was instrumental in the development of the first nuclear weapon during World War II. Oppenheimer, often known as the "father of the atomic bomb," is a complex figure whose legacy is still debated to this day.

In order to accurately depict the Trinity test, the first nuclear weapon detonation, Nolan and his team went to great lengths to avoid using CGI. Instead, they used practical effects and set design to recreate the explosion on a scale never before seen on screen.

"Andrew Jackson — my visual effects supervisor, I got him on board early on — was looking at how we could do a lot of the visual elements of the film practically, from representing quantum dynamics and quantum physics to the Trinity test itself, to recreating, with my team, Los Alamos up on a mesa in New Mexico in extraordinary weather, a lot of which was needed for the film, in terms of the very harsh conditions out there — there were huge practical challenges." This dedication to practical effects is a hallmark of Nolan's work, and has helped him create some of the most memorable and immersive scenes in recent cinema. In Oppenheimer, this approach allows for a more realistic and visceral experience for the audience, transporting them back in time to witness the momentous event.

Christopher Nolan states that Oppenheimer will be unlike any historical biopic that audiences have seen before. He describes it as a story with "immense scope and scale" that was one of the most challenging projects he has ever worked on.

Nolan's passion for pushing the limits of what is possible in film is sure to make Oppenheimer a must-see event when it hits theaters in summer 2023. With its epic story and commitment to practical effects, Oppenheimer is sure to be a landmark achievement in Nolan's already impressive filmography.

Oppenheimer opens in theaters July 21, 2023.
