Nick Fury Had It the Hardest after the Blip, and Secret Invasion Explains Why
Secret Invasion’s first episode has just been released, and it’s everything we wanted and more.
Samuel L. Jackson has been on a superhero break from the MCU since 2019 when he last appeared in Spider-Man: Far From Home. In the post-credits scene, we find out that it’s actually Talos the Skrull who has been impersonating Fury for the entire movie, while the real Nick is taking a space vacation aboard a Skrull ship.
Even back then, we were all thinking the same thing – why would Fury leave Earth unattended and unprotected and go off on space adventures? For years, no explanation has been provided.
The most popular theory is that he isn’t himself after the Blip because he has lost his way. Being absent for five years will do that to anyone!
In Secret Invasion, that theory finally gets some proof. Before Thanos wiped out half the universe (including Fury), Nick knew everything: who to go to in case of global threats, what to do in such cases, and how to have a plan B, C, and so on.
Then the Avengers defeated Thanos and brought everyone back, and Nick ended up in a whole new world that he knew nothing about, where everything was out of his league.
It was easier for him to hide out in space than to admit that he wasn’t the IT spy anymore. The result? An entire invasion has gone right by him, and now the planet is facing another extinction-level threat, which is essentially Fury’s fault.
The first episode doesn’t give too much away, but it’s obvious that Nick Fury has changed, and not for the better. Even Maria Hill, who is unexpectedly killed right at the beginning, comments that Nick’s “footing” is unsteady. Secret Invasion builds up on that by having Fury limp and literally be unsteady as soon as he steps back onto Earth.
The Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. has once lost a war despite his efforts to protect his home planet. Now he has to deal with an invasion that is happening because of his lack of effort, and this might prove to be his redemption arc. Fury must stop the Skrulls before it’s too late as this is his ticket to regaining everything he has lost.
