Featuring 50 Cent in its cast is probably the movie’s biggest flex though.

Summary:

  • A 2013 thriller starring Nicholas Cage has been thriving in Netflix ’s top for two weeks now, despite having received mixed reviews upon its release back in the day.
  • The movie’s plot revolves around an Alaska trooper who makes an attempt to finally catch a serial killer by finding his surviving victim and befriending her.
  • The film received quite a cold welcome from both critics and viewers, eventually not being able to break even due to its release in selected theaters.

Whether it’s due to Nicholas Cage’s acclaimed performance or not, the actor’s mediocre thriller The Frozen Ground has suddenly made its way to Netflix’s global top more than ten years after its theatrical release.

Currently holding the number 7 position to-date, the movie has been going strong after it initially entered the chart with the same place last week, according to FlixPatrol.

Packed with this-day big Hollywood stars like Vanessa Hudgens, John Cusack and, ironically, 50 Cent, The Frozen Ground follows Alaska Trooper Jack Halcombe, portrayed by Cage, embarking on a hunt for local serial killer Robert Hansen who is believed to have been torturing and sexually assaulting young girls for 13 years.

To get more evidence for Hansen’s arrest, Halcombe dives deep into the whole story and finds out that one victim, Cindy Paulsen, somehow managed to survive, though since then she’s turned into an unsociable drug addict who wouldn’t pour her heart out to a stranger.

Halcombe thus has to find a way to befriend her while also trying to save other girls from being killed.

Despite quite a compelling plot, upon its release back in 2013 The Frozen Ground wasn’t met with a lot of enthusiasm. The film failed to break even due to its release in selected theaters garnering only around $5 million against the initial budget of $19 million. Both critics and viewers sank the movie even more giving it average scores of 61% and 50% respectively.

That was probably quite a gut-wrenching moment for Nicholas Cage who at that time was struggling to revive his acting career after several consecutive flops in earlier years.

Eleven years later, Cage is at a much better position, and this may be the reason why Netflix viewers suddenly brought the failed 2013 movie to the streaming’s top.

The actor’s wide range of artistic work was once again proved even in The Frozen Ground making the film a relatively good watch, despite all the criticism.
