New Superman Will Have a Totally Unique Aesthetic to Him, James Gunn Promises
James Gunn has the world's most famous superhero to toy around with, and the director wants no half-measures: Gunn aims at completely reimagining Superman.
Reshaping an entire superhero universe is a gargantuan undertaking, but that's exactly what James Gunn plans on doing after becoming the new co-CEO of DC Studios.
The most difficult — and rewarding — part of this quest is to tackle and reimagine the world's most popular superheroes: Superman and Batman.
While no one can be sure when Bruce Wayne's turn will come, the new Clark Kent is 100% underway now: Gunn intends to open his new DC Universe with a movie called Superman: Legacy, after all.
The director doesn't seem to be afraid of the task ahead: if anything, he's excited — and already has a vision of the new Man of Steel.
As the auditions for the role are still going on, James Gunn is working out what he calls "the aesthetic" of Superman: Legacy.
The director addressed it during his recent visit to the Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum podcast and promised that the new Man of Steel will be like nothing we've ever seen before.
"We all have to work together to create this one, unified aesthetic. The same thing we all did on Suicide Squad. The same thing we did on Guardians 3.
We have to work together to create one unified aesthetic. So, especially in my movies, with how we're doing Superman, we're creating an aesthetic that hasn't, you know, existed before," explained James Gunn.
This is a rather serious issue considering the legacy (yeah) the previous interpretations of Man of Steel left behind.
The predecessor of Gunn's Superman was Snyder's version, and while Henry Cavill was undeniably great in this role, the overall aesthetic of those movies was very dark and grim.
James Gunn has a chance to make Superman the beacon of hope that he's always been and add those bright and cheerful colors back — conveniently, this option goes really well with the director's signature style.
But since Gunn wants to surprise everyone and create something totally unique, it could be virtually anything.
