Netflix’s New Fantastic Show Brings Back Nostalgia of the 95%-Rated Sci-Fi Hit
Newly-released German show reminds of the beloved science fiction banger.
Netflix ’s original series often intrigue their viewers by the sophisticated plot and brave directing decisions, German originals haven’t become an exception.
Since 2017 the platform’s collaboration with the country’s creators have brought several outstanding shows, which include The Signal, which successfully premiered on March 7.
New German sci-fi drama series showcases a father (played by Florian David Fitz) and daughter (Yuna Bennett), who are looking forward to their mother’s (Peri Baumeister) return from space, as she disappears without a trace after her astronaut mission on the International Space Nation. Something strange happens to her on her way back, and her family is trying to figure out what exactly is with their mother and where she is.
The four hour-long show has already received a number of positive reviews, where most of which concern its captivating scientific aspect, with the topics of time-traveling and parallel realities being involved.
“Old school SciFi fans will probably enjoy this”, admits the Redditor @XenaBard.
However, viewers share the opinion the series’ finale is quite guessable and disappointing, which spoils the impression of its “cleverness”.
Besides some obvious claims towards The Signal’s ending, it’s obvious people’s interest in sci-fi shows hasn’t faded at all, which is proven by the show’s jump to the top of Netflix's charts and by the hot temperature of the Internet discussions regarding it.
In this connection, it’s impossible not to recall the service's first German-language original series named Dark, a massively successful mysterious sci-fi thriller, which hitted all possible charts and gained enormous praise from both critics and viewers from its initial release in 2017 to its cancellation after the third season in 2020.
Dark has become a definitive science fiction series of the decade, featuring a fictional German town and its gloomy residents dealing with strange disappearances of their children. This banger show was centered on time-traveling that spanned several generations and explored the existential implications of time and its effect on humanity.
The hole in the sci-fi segment of Netflix’s originals was empty since Dark was canceled four years ago. Hopefully, now fans of the genre can steer their interest towards The Signal and the other upcoming sci-fi show, 3 Body Problem, coming on March 21.
