And this will be a perfect way to bring him back.

The NCIS franchise may have officially said goodbye to Mark Harmon and his Leroy Jethro Gibbs, but one of the upcoming spinoffs can change things radically.

Only several months away from finally hitting the screens, NCIS: Tony & Ziva will follow NCIS’ former Special Agents Tony DiNozzo and Ziva David embarking on new dangerous missions across Europe on their own.

So far there hasn’t been any sign of other original characters entering the scene, but the flagship series’ past suggests that the history might repeat itself in a brand new story.

Though this time Gibbs seemed to be pretty adamant about his decision to leave NCIS and spend his retirement chilling out in Alaska, Ziva once thwarted his plan in the show’s earlier seasons and she might do so again.

The season 3 finale saw Gibbs’ first attempt to retire after his team couldn’t prevent a terrorist attack, but he was quick to get back to work when Ziva urged her former boss to help her.

In season 4 episode 1, Ziva witnesses an explosion that results in several casualties and, not able to just pass by it, gets involved in the crime scene, figuring out that the terrorist was someone she knew and considered dead.

When Ziva accidentally lets him go away, she’s framed, becoming the main suspect in the murder of several innocent people, and then she has no other choice but to ask Gibbs to save her.

Ziva and Gibbs’ sudden reunion after the latter departed from NCIS to enjoy the rest of his life in Mexico proves that the characters managed to establish a unique kind of relationship. It works even considering that Ziva didn’t spend that much time working with the MCRT leader since she was introduced to the show in season 3.

Both Ziva and Gibbs owed their lives to each other at some point as the latter dropped his retirement plans to save the former, and Ziva had prevented Gibbs’ death in season 3.

Given that NCIS: Tony & Ziva will now see Ziva acting with no backup support from NCIS’ strongest Agents, it seems like her getting into some serious trouble might be the best way for Mark Harmon’s Gibbs to make a comeback to the franchise, even if he’ll have to postpone his retirement plans for a while once again.
