Everyone’s favorite Gibbs is still there — just not in the way fans wanted.

NCIS: Origins’ biggest mystery is finally unveiled now that the show is getting closer to its release date this fall, though it’s definitely now what its potential viewers expected to hear.

Following NCIS’ biggest figure Leroy Jethro Gibbs during his earlier years back in the 1990s, the spinoff is helmed by the character’s original actor Mark Harmon who now serves as NCIS: Origins’ executive producer and narrator.

Despite initially low chances for something like this to happen, the original show’s fans had their fingers crossed for Harmon’s physical appearance on the show as well, yet all those theories have just been brutally debunked by the actor himself.

Ahead of NCIS: Origins’ premiere in October, Harmon opened up about his role in the project, revealing that this time he will stay behind the cameras.

According to the actor, he has no plans of appearing alongside his character’s younger version Austin Stowell adding that “I'm fine with the stepback role and [to] let the [new] cast do the work. I'm pleased to be part of it. I'm a distant part. I'm just here to support.”

While many still waited for Harmon to show up in the spinoff at some point, it was pretty clear that the actor’s return to his role would cause more problems rather than give the upcoming series benefits.

Initially, there was no real need for Harmon to enter the scene as the spinoff will take its viewers back in time giving a closer look at Gibbs’ life and career while he was young.

Additionally, Harmon coming back as Gibbs would create a major problem for Austin Stowell who in the future series portrays the character’s younger version.

Though it’s pretty obvious that there’s no way for NCIS: Origins to dodge all the numerous comparisons that will follow soon after the spinoff premieres on CBS, it’s still safer for Stowell to have the role to his own in here rather than share it with someone who spent years developing Gibbs’ image on TV.

Whatever the future holds for NCIS: Origins and Austin Stowell as young Gibbs, not engaging Mark Harmon into the on-screen action was a way better decision, especially since Harmon will still be a part of the storyline as its narrator.

NCIS: Origins is set to premiere on CBS on October 14.
