Mission: Impossible Director Has No Idea How to End the Franchise in Dead Reckoning Part II
Christopher McQuarrie admits that he still doesn't know how to end the next Mission: Impossible movie — or even if it will be the last installment of the franchise.
The Mission: Impossible franchise has been running for over 25 years now, and while everyone involved got significantly older, the movies themselves didn't: every new entry keeps building upon the previous ones, and they never fail to amaze the audience. This is just the Mission: Impossible way, and they stick to it.
In its long run, the franchise has developed many storylines and arcs and earned millions of fans all over the world eager to learn what all the characters and plotlines come to in the end. The truth is, the fans are not the only ones wondering that: the director and creator of Mission: Impossible, Christopher McQuarrie, also has no clue!
In his recent interview with Collider, McQuarrie swore that the ending of the next movie was still obscure to him, but that didn't bother the director in the slightest.
"I don't know what the ending of Part Two is, so I couldn't tell you. I'm not being evasive. I could tell you that I know what the end of Part Two is, but I can't guarantee that that will be the ending when we get there. Tom and I never obsess about executing the plan. We always have a direction," laughed McQuarrie.
According to the director, his and Cruise's approach revolves around picking a direction and going there to realize the desired conclusion in the process. It's not about not having a plan at all; it's about not having the end goal set in stone. McQuarrie admitted that they filmed Dead Reckoning Part I the same way.
"I brought everyone together into that red car on the train and said, 'I do not know how this movie ends, but I know it ends in this car. That's all I know.' And sure enough, it did, and sure enough, it kept ending in that car. <...> Instinctively and on a gut level I knew, based on how the action scene was constructed, the entire movie was gonna end there," explained the director.
Such a revelation would've come as a big negative from anyone else, but it's Christopher McQuarrie, so we don't feel even slightly bothered: he's one of the most acclaimed screenwriters in the industry… And with the currently ongoing strike, he and Cruise have a plethora of time to figure out the new direction to go in M:I8.
