Mission: Impossible Crew Can't Take Cruise's Stunts: 'We Might Lose Tom'
Whenever Tom Cruise is performing his stunts, his crew is worried sick for the man as they’re trying to settle with the fact that the actor will get himself killed one day.
It’s no one’s secret that Tom Cruise does all of his stunts himself, including the most insane ones; if anything, this fact is the staple of the actor’s reputation and his greatest pride. No matter what pure chaos you see on your screens while watching Mission: Impossible, be sure that Tom Cruise was there himself, with no exceptions.
On one hand, when your lead actor is a crazy adrenaline junkie with superhuman regeneration and a death wish, this totally allows for more sick shots and action sequences; on the other hand, this very fact has the entire filming crew and cast gravely worried for their colleague each time he goes out to set a new record.
In the case of Tom Cruise, this should be multiplied by ten: in fact, after seeing the footage of the filming crew freaking out after watching the actor yeeting himself off a cliff while speeding on a motorcycle for the sixth time that day, we’re honestly surprised that the movie’s team doesn’t strictly consist of white-haired folks.
Sure enough, working with Cruise is a massive stress for everyone involved. Watching their colleague repeatedly put himself in the most dangerous situations imaginable can’t be good for one’s mental health, and the actor’s co-stars and crew members are almost trying to prepare themselves for the inevitable.
“Tom is jumping off cliffs on a motorbike he’s <...> hanging off trains — it’s genuinely dangerous stuff. There’s always a sense that, you know, one day, something might go wrong… We might lose Tom, you know. Anytime there’s a big stunt, we all have that sense of, you know, fear, but he always pulls it off,” shared Simon Pegg (Benji).
Having Tom Cruise on the set is one hell of an emotional rollercoaster for sure with panic and terror giving way to relief… This results in the new most insane, dangerous, or the biggest stunt in cinema history in almost every single movie, so that’s cool — but Cruise’s colleagues are genuinely scared for his life and are mentally preparing themselves to see his stunt fail one day.
