Song Kang has taken on a new supernatural role.

Summary

  • The second season of Sweet Home may not have received the same warm reviews, but fans are still eagerly awaiting the release of the third season.
  • Meanwhile, the show's main star, Song Kang, has taken on another project that is also available on Netflix.
  • The new series is a great fantasy comedy-drama where the protagonist is very reminiscent of Sweet Home's Hyun-Soo.

South Korean action-horror drama Sweet Home, based on the webtoon of the same name by Kim Carnby and Hwang Young-chan, holds a special place among Netflix's original series. The second season, however, received a fair amount of criticism, as fans of the comic complained about the writers' creative liberties, which deviated heavily from the original and made the plot more inconsistent.

But what no one can deny about Sweet Home is the incredibly talented cast. This is especially true for lead actor Song Kang. The actor is just beginning to conquer the South Korean television and film industry, but he is already jumping into high-profile roles and participating in more and more projects. A new K-drama starring him was released on Netflix less than a month ago, and it could be a great option to watch while we wait for the third season of Sweet Home.

Song Kang Plays Another Supernatural Character

Well, what are K-dramas without rom-coms, and what are rom-coms without crazy plot twists! Starting November 24th, the fantasy comedy-drama My Demon, co-produced by Studio S, which is also responsible for co-producing the equally popular Korean drama on Netflix Business Proposal, will be released on SBS TV and Wavve in Korea and Netflix in the US.

My Demon is a love story that follows a cold-blooded 200-year-old demon, Jeong Gu-won, who has taken human form. He exists by making deals with people based on their deeply buried desires and vulnerabilities, resulting in the sale of souls.

One day, Gu-won loses his powers, and the only one who can help him is played by Kim Yoo-jung (Moon Embracing the Sun, Backstreet Rookie, 20th Century Girl) Do Do-hee, the equally cold-blooded heiress of a large conglomerate, with whom the demon must make a contract marriage after an awkward blind date.

Though only a few episodes have been released, viewers immediately praised My Demon for its chemistry between the male and female leads, excellent humor that dilutes the supernatural atmosphere, and excellent writing that is self-aware enough to play on classic K-drama marriage tropes. And while there are plenty of cringe-worthy moments in the show, almost everyone notes that it is incredibly addictive.

This Role Is a Perfect Reflection of Hyun-Soo

Song Kang's new role is a great parallel to his character from Sweet Home, as Hyun-Soo is a complex and ambiguous character - just like Jeong Gu-won.

As we all know, Hyun-Soo was a high school student who got infected and turned into a creature that combines both monster and human aspects. The protagonist has to decide which part should prevail in order not to harm his loved ones and to remain human. Gu-won, on the other hand, is a monster who has no humanity but tries to resemble humans. However, even a demon can experience human emotions.

The series is ongoing, with new episodes released on Netflix on Fridays and Saturdays (yes, sometimes there are series on the streaming service that can't be binge-watched all at once!) So far, only six episodes have been released since November 24, and the next one is expected on Friday, December 15.

In the meantime, let's not forget that Song Kang has no intention of saying goodbye to his character Hyun-soo, who will only have to find out where the line between man and monster lies, as well as face the evolved Lee Eun-hyuk. The third and final season of Sweet Home is scheduled to air in 2024.
