Matthew Broderick Had Second Thoughts on Only Murders In The Building Cameo For a Relatable Reason
It’s hard to find the right balance between the real you, and the you that would be interesting to watch.
The TV series episodes that include a celebrity cameo are usually the most fun for viewers to watch and remember, no matter what the show. Some of the best TV moments have come from showrunners inviting their famous friends to join them for an episode or two to see where the chemistry with the main cast might lead.
However, there is a danger for those who agree to appear as themselves: you have to make sure you don't come off as something you don't want to be. Although the shows are mostly fictional, viewers tend to believe everything they see on TV, so the character you play quickly becomes associated with your personality.
When you don't have a character and have to play yourself, the number of assumptions only grows.
While some celebrities take advantage of this opportunity and try to come across as down-to-earth and generally likable people, like Elon Musk on The Big Bang Theory or Donald Trump on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, others are not afraid to show their flaws and laugh at themselves.
Such was the case with Matthew Broderick and his Only Murders In The Building cameo. In fact, the actor even had some second thoughts about how he would appear on screen. Series co-creator John Hoffman recalled the dialogue between the two to TVLine:
“When you tell an actor that they’re going to be playing themselves, it brings up a lot of questions. He asked, ‘How awful am I?’ and I answered, ‘You’re not awful. You’re annoying more than anything,’ and he said, ‘Ooh, that I like!'” Hoffman shared.
Due to the nature of the show, we wouldn't expect too many similarities between Broderick's Only Murders In The Building persona and him in real life. However, his exaggerated and pompous version will be a 100% fit for the comedic parts of the show.
If you want to see Matthew Broderick take over the stage in Only Murders In The Building, be sure to tune in to Episode 7 of Season 3, which aired on September 12th. You can catch up on the episodes by streaming the series on Hulu.
