Leave Twin Peaks Alone: Kyle MacLachlan Gets Harshly Candid on Revival Attempts
The Dale Cooper actor is against the idea of rebooting his damn fine show.
Summary:
- Twin Peaks is a mystery show created by David Lynch and Mark Frost, which aired in 1990-1991 and concluded with the third season in 2017.
- Kyle MacLachlan gained worldwide popularity by playing the show’s leading character, Agent Dale Cooper.
- When asked about Twin Peaks revival, the actor stood against it.
34 years ago, on April 8, Mark Frost and David Lynch’s mystery drama series premiered on ABC, showing the whole world the leading character of Special Agent Dale Cooper. The FBI agent on his mission to investigate the murder of Laura Palmer, a popular local schoolgirl, was outstandingly portrayed by the Emmy-nominated Kyle Maclachlan.
The actor, who is best recognized for his work with Lynch not only on Twin Peaks, but also for starring in the filmmaker’s Dune ( 1984) and Blue Velvet (1986), also reprised to the role of Agent Cooper in the third season of the show, also known as Twin Peaks: The Return in 2017. It ended his character’s arc perfectly, as well as the whole series.
However, given the then-enormous success of this show, including the hype of MacLachlan’s Cooper, whose quotes and onscreen habits have become iconic, there were no other visible attempts to revive the Twin Peaks cinematic universe. The reboot or the next season of this sensational series has never been spoken of by Lynch himself.
The leading actor, in his turn, despite the popularity the show has given to him, stands against rebooting it. In his recent interview at Cannes International Series Festival, Maclachlan was asked about his attitude towards the potential Twin Peaks reboot, to which he expressed his genuine resentment.
“I don’t think I’d want to see that and I don’t think anyone should attempt it,” he said, recalling the current controversial tendency to reboot the classic shows and movies.
Besides, the actor confessed it was a challenge to him to join Twin Peaks’ cast as “there was definitely a stigma attached to TV”, while he was only starting his movie career.
“But it turned out I didn’t need to worry,” concludes the actor, adding that the involvement of David Lynch had him feeling more comfortable and boosted confidence in their show.
Fans questioned the very idea of asking about rebooting Twin Peaks, as it’d seem quite a crazy project.
According to their opinion, the 2017 season was quite a finale to the whole story, proving no one can ever speculate on the show’s legacy more.
“For the most part, The Return felt like going back to your childhood home after it had been abandoned. And you're just walking around in the dust,” admits Redditor @Elcheatobandito, and it’s a fair comparison to the show of our childhood or youth.
While no one is really going to potentially spoil or distort Twin Peaks, you can rewatch this sophisticated mystery series, as it’s now available on Prime.
