It's all up to the network now.

Summary:

  • Justified: City Primeval season 1 ended with a cliffhanger very much hinting at a possible continuation of the story
  • FX has yet to announce the season 2 renewal for the Justified spinoff
  • However, showrunners Michael Dinner and Dave Andron hinted that main stars of City Primeval, Timothy Olyphant and Walton Goggins, are on board with the idea of making more Justified

Throughout the entirety of Justified: City Primeval, few fans didn't dream of seeing the ultimate on-screen reunion of Timothy Olyphant's Raylan and Walton Goggins' Boyd. For the majority of the first season, City Primeval pretended it was perfectly fine not addressing the elephant in the room, trying to pull it off without the series' main villain.

However, the season finale has changed it all by having Goggins' beloved antagonist escaping the prison and making things very, very difficult for Raylan, who literally has just decided to retire.

Leaving a cliffhanger like that unresolved would be a huge gut-punch for fans, so the Justified fandom believes that the City Primeval renewal for a second season is only a question of time.

Well, turns out the fandom is not alone.

Will Justified: City Primeval Return For Season 2?

Basically, looks like every essential crew member necessary to make City Primeval season 2 happen is on board with the idea. Showrunners Michael Dinner and Dave Andron have already indicated that the big comeback is possible when speaking to EW.

However, the final decision is to be made by FX, and it looks like the network has not yet made things clear.

"I think we could do that, but it's up to the network," Dinner said when asked about bringing Justified back. "Walton's interested, and Tim's interested, and we think there's another chapter in Raylan's life."

With both main actors and showrunners interested in keeping things going, it would only take FX one "yes" to make it happen. Interestingly enough, back in 2015, when the original Justified was cancelled, it was Olyphant and the series creator Graham Yost who pulled the plug; the network was eager to continue the show.

What Justified Season 2 Could Be About?

The showrunners have plenty of ideas to make sure that City Primeval season 2 lives up to the standard already set by the first season and the original show. For instance, at least one big family secret can spice things up big time.

"[In the original Justified's finale,] Boyd is sent to prison. Ava disappears, and when Raylan tracks her down, she is raising Boyd's child—a child he doesn't know he has. To keep Ava's secret safe, Raylan visits Boyd in prison and tells him Ava is dead. But if Boyd were to discover that Ava is alive and he is a father? "That is epic story fodder for Boyd to find that out," Andron told EW.

The Justified fandom is all excited about the potential renewal; moreover, many people want more spinoffs to be announced. And clearly, City Primeval's big cliffhanger wasn't enough for the fans of Raylan vs. Boyd iconic stand-off; so in terms of content, the show is pretty much settled.

However, it's been nothing but radio silence from FX on City Primeval season 2 so far; still, knowing that the showrunners and main stars are ready to be summoned back to set is reassuring.
