Jason Statham's 2024 R-Rated $153M Hit Comes to Streaming This Friday

If you're looking for an old-school and super fun action hit, look no further than Prime and Apple TV this coming Friday. That's when you'll be able to see the latest Jason Staham action movie, which looks like it might be the first in a high-octane series.

What's It About?

Eloise Parker is a retired school teacher who lives on a farm and spends her spare time managing a children's charity. She has a good friend in Adam Clay, a retired member of a classified organization known as 'The Beekeepers'. These days, Adam literally tends to bees and is helping to bring Eloise's land back to life.

When Eloise falls for a phishing scam, the scammers don't just take all of her life savings – they also drain the account of the charity she runs. Distraught, Eloise kills herself.

Eloise's daughter Verona is an agent at the FBI, and she immediately suspects that Adam had something to do with her mother's death. However, all evidence points to suicide. Verona lets Adam go, vowing to stop the scammers who drove her mother to her death. But Adam has the same plan.

In true John Wick fashion, Adam takes the skills of his former life and begins a systematic take-down of everyone involved in the crime. Fingers are severed, shots are fired, and an R-rated action extravaganza that is The Beekeeper takes off.

Why Bees?

In this world, the highly-trained, highly-classified 'Beekeepers' organization are the ones secretly keeping the world working. When diplomacy, laws, and democracy fail, the Beekeepers get in there and take care of business.

In real life, our entire society is actually highly dependent upon bees – without the little insects we would lose 80% of all crops, and the world would starve. In an interview with Screen Rant, director David Ayer said that the name of The Beekeepers:

'...really connects to this greater mythology. Every society is dependent upon beekeepers. No bees, no agriculture, no civilization. None of this would exist without the beekeeper, which is pretty wild when you think about it. And then I think we always have that dream or that aspiration that maybe there is somebody looking out for us that, when the system fails, they can bring the justice we need.'

Hey, it's that guy from that thing!

Action staple Jason Statham is of course the titular Beekeeper, but the cast is rounded out by some pretty top-notch talent. The always sinister Jeremy Irons plays Big Bad Guy ​​Wallace Westwyld, while Emmy Raver-Lampman (The Umbrella Academy, Hamilton) plays Verona. Josh Hutcherson (The Hunger Games ) and Minnie Driver (Good Will Hunting, Beyond the Lights) round out the cast.

When asked about working with action legend Jason Statham, director David Ayer had nothing but praise for the star, saying:

'Jason was amazing to work with. It's interesting because he's an athlete, he's a martial artist, he's a fighter, and this is a guy that does all his own stunts… I brought my A-game. He brought his A+ game, so he schooled me on a lot of action. He schooled me, and I really feel like I learned a lot from him.'

Ayer and Statham liked working together so much that they are now collaborating on another action movie, Levon's Trade. The film is based on a book by Chuck Dixon, though the screenplay was written by none other than Sylvester Stallone. (Stallone, you might have forgotten, wrote the screenplay for both Rocky and Rambo: First Blood.)

There's a huge mythology behind The Beekeeper, and given the movie's popularity it seems likely that we'll see a lot more of Adam Clay in the future.
