Here's How Laenor Velaryon is Able to Ride Dragons

In the 'Game of Thrones ' universe, the privilege to ride dragons is enjoyed almost exclusively by the bearers of the Targaryen surname. However, sometimes there are certain exceptions, and we got to witness one of those in episode 3 of 'House of the Dragon ' on Sunday.

At the end of the episode, titled 'Second of His Name', Laenor Velaryon stormed into the battle at the Stepstones, riding his dragon Seasmoke. He effectively put an end to the battle and brought undisputed victory to Daemon Targaryen. Naturally, the victory came so easily due to him riding a dragon and therefore using its fire against the Crabfeeders.

But how is he able to ride a dragon in the first place? After all, he does not have a Targaryen last name, which confused many fans who believed that only Targaryens could fly dragons.

However, the explanation is pretty simple. Despite not bearing the Targaryen last name, Laenor does have this House's blood, as he is the only son of Lord Corlys Velaryon and Princess Rhaenys Targaryen.

In line with the books, he rides Seasmoke – a pale silver-grey dragon that is a bit younger than Daemon's Caraxes and Rhaenyra's Syrax. Seasmoke also has less experience in battles. In 'House of the Dragon', the Stepstones battle is the first one we see Seasmoke participating in.

According to the books, Laenor married Rhaenyra and had three children with her, even though there are speculations that the kids were in fact fathered by her lover rather than Laenor himself. Still, the houses of Targaryen and Velaryon have united once again, even though this unity could not prevent a civil war among the Targaryens, which is known as the Dance of the Dragons.
