Hated The Hobbit Trilogy? Rings of Power Might Make You Reconsider
Without a doubt, Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy is by far the best adaptation of J. R. R. Tolkien's work, and anyone who treads on that ground is doomed to be compared to it.
The Lord of the Rings adaptation has been enjoyed by even the most die-hard fans of Tolkien's work, and even some of the plot changes are considered by most to be better than the original.
The Peter Jackson's trilogy set the bar very high, and subsequent adaptations could not avoid a stream of unflattering discussions.
Although The Hobbit was also made into a movie by Peter Jackson, it did not receive the same warm reception from the public.
Many were unhappy with the fact that the story was stretched out over as many as three movies, and that a love story including a new character was added, and the viability of this addition was questioned by many.
"PJ was exhausted and disinterested in The Hobbit and it shows. Then the studio forced them to make the movies in a compressed amount of time, and meddled with the story by making it into a trilogy and adding a romance, etc.," Reddit user TheRealProtozoid said.
The next screen adaptation, however, forced a rethinking of the public's opinion and a softening of criticism of The Hobbit trilogy.
The Rings of Power series from Amazon was received by fans more than coldly. Of great importance was the fact that the series was positioned as the most expensive in history, which it was, giving viewers hope for something epic, but those hopes did not materialize.
Fans have criticized almost every aspect of the show. For example, the dialogues seemed lifeless and simulated, and there was nothing in the atmosphere of the series that conveyed the spirit of Tolkien's works.
"This is a badly written, badly plotted, badly acted show, which failed to grip. Overloud "epic" music trying to compensate for lack of substance in the show.
I watched the first episode for 20 mins, got bored, forwarded it few mins to see if it gets better, [it] didn't," Reddit user Middle_Feeling6040 commented.
Although fans were initially unhappy with The Hobbit, many agree that the new Rings of Power put it in a much more positive spotlight.
"It [The Hobbit] had to live up to the LotR trilogy and obviously couldn't, but at least it wasn't hot garbage and a complete disrespect to the source material like RoP was," Reddit user SumthingStupid added.
Though The Hobbit didn't become the same globally acclaimed adaptation of Tolkien's work, moving more in the direction of simple entertainment cinema, fans concluded that it was still a worthy trilogy and fun to watch, while The Rings of Power unfortunately became, according to many, an insult to the great author's legacy.
