Harry Potter: Huge Deathly Hallows Foreshadowing in Sorcerer's Stone

The Centaurs are wise and knowledgeable, and their ancient Divination techniques allow them to predict events that might be years and centuries in the future. There’s one slight downside to the Centaurs’ premonition, however: they are never sure about the date of the events they foresee, which may lead to weird scenarios.

Like that time when in The Sorcerer’s Stone, the Centaurs foresaw the events of The Deathly Hallows which would only happen seven years later!

Centaurs Wanted Harry to Die in Sorcerer’s Stone

The first time Harry Potter encountered Lord Voldemort happened in the Forbidden Forest: Harry was sent there for detention and found a mysterious dark figure drinking Unicorn’s blood. Firenze, the Centaur who would later teach Divination at Hogwarts, interfered and saved Harry from what looked like inevitable death.

Later, Firenze was confronted by the other Centaurs who were furious at him for saving The Boy Who Lived. According to Bane, the Centaurs knew from the stars that Harry Potter had to die by Voldemort’s hand in the Forbidden Forest, and that would be the cause of Lord Voldemort’s final destruction and the end of the war.

At the time, it seemed like the Centaurs wanted Harry to die by Voldemort’s hand because they were either delusional or cruel, but that wasn’t the case. In fact, they were right about the events that had to transpire, but they misinterpreted the dates.

Centaurs Foresaw Harry’s Death in Deathly Hallows

The real reason why Bane and the other Centaurs were furious with Firenze was not that they wanted the eleven-year-old boy to die; they merely knew he had to. But, as previously stated, the Centaurs’ Divination works in mysterious ways, allowing them to learn the future events without learning the time when they will transpire.

The Centaurs knew that for Lord Voldemort to fall, he must first kill Harry Potter in the Forbidden Forest, and they considered the encounter between Harry, Voldemort-possessed Quirrell, and Firenze during the Trio’s first year at Hogwarts to be the event they foresaw. They were, of course, very wrong; it was not yet the time.

Seven years later, Harry Potter would enter the Forbidden Forest at his own will to die by Lord Voldemort’s hand, knowing that it was his mission all along. The Dark Lord would kill him without remorse, destroying the Horcrux that his body housed. Then, after Nagini’s death, Voldemort himself would be finally killed…by Harry.

From the planets and stars, the Centaurs only knew a few details of what would happen, and they had no idea when those events would occur. Firenze saving Harry was the ultimate betrayal for them since in their eyes, Firenze valued one human boy’s life beyond anyone else’s who would die at the hand of Voldemort.

Firenze was the only Centaur wise enough to recognize that it wasn’t yet the time for Harry to die, so he protected the boy. Seven years later, the Centaur army would join the Battle of Hogwarts — but only after Voldemort would kill Harry Potter in the Forbidden Forest, just like the planets and stars told them would happen.
