Harry Potter 4's Biggest Plot Twist Is Heavily Spoiled Halfway Through the Movie
Eagle-eyed fans noticed perhaps the biggest Goblet of Fire finale spoiler in the film.
Out of all the movies, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire had arguably the most unpredictable and staggering chain of plot twists in its finale, rivaled only by The Half-Blood Prince. Between the Goblet being a portal, Cedric dying in an instant, Voldemort’s resurrection, and Moody having been a Death Eater all along, there’s a lot to unpack in this installment’s finale.
Especially, if you haven’t been too attentive throughout the movie.
Voldemort’s Return Wasn’t GoF’s Biggest Twist
We just mentioned four major plot twists from The Goblet of Fire’s finale, but only one of them was genuinely shocking. We knew that something was seriously off with Harry’s participation in the Triwizard Tournament; we knew that Voldemort would be back at some point, so why not then; and we hadn’t known Cedric for long enough to have any idea of his life expectancy, but he lowkey felt like a one-off character.
It’s the Fake Moody twist that got us all.
When you’re reading or watching The Goblet of Fire for the first time, it’s incredibly fun to try and guess who could be the traitor. Snape, Bagman, Karkaroff, and Crouch — all of them could be Voldemort’s agents in the audience’s eyes… But not Alastor Moody, the one character who’s established as a staunch Auror with a reputation for being hellbent on capturing every last Death Eater.
But if you paid attention, you might have spoiled this epic plot twist for yourself about halfway through the movie!
Second Moody Is Shown Long Before the Finale
Obviously, we now know that Professor Moody wasn’t the real Auror: the actual Alastor was trapped in a chest in the impostor’s room. Barty Crouch Jr., the real culprit, played his role incredibly well — but at one point, he almost revealed himself right before Harry and the good viewers at home. Remember his Foe-Glass?
As Crouch Jr. explains, the Foe-Glass shows his enemies… And when we and Harry look at it, it shows several faces floating around Fake Moody’s reflection. But here’s the thing: Moody’s face is reflected twice — the one in the center is the disguised Crouch Jr., and then there’s another mug of his floating in the “enemy” section.
It doesn’t help that when Fake Moody tells Harry about the Foe-Glass’ purpose, the chest where the real Alastor is trapped starts shaking violently. An attentive viewer might have caught on to this blatant clue and put the equation together as the movie effectively shows us that there are two Moody’s and there’s someone in the chest.
But let’s be real here: none of us realized what this detail really meant, and pretty much no one suspected Professor Moody to be Voldemort’s agent.
