They’re getting a whole season instead.

Summary:

  • Like many shows that celebrate major milestones with a nostalgic episode, Grey's Anatomy fans were gearing up for a 20th anniversary celebration.
  • The show premiered on March 27, 2005, so fans were looking forward to the third episode of the 20th season, which will air on Thursday, March 28.
  • However, according to showrunner Meg Marinis, there won't be a celebratory episode this year.

While it is impressive for a show to survive a full decade on the air and still have enough viewers to keep going, the two-decade milestone is something that very few shows can achieve. Now that Grey's Anatomy has officially entered this realm as the longest-running medical procedural on U.S. television, it deserves a round of applause.

And even though the majority of Grey's fans have a bone to pick with the show, the truth is that they're still as invested in the show as they were back in 2004. That alone calls for a massive celebration.

Grey’s Anatomy 20th Anniversary Special

With the new showrunner for the season, Meg Marinis, taking over the story, some fans were afraid that the 20th season would be a flop, and others, on the contrary, were hoping to see a breath of fresh air in the story that had become repetitive and slightly boring over the past few years.

One thing both groups agreed on, however, was that the 20th season had to be something special. And what could be more special than a celebratory episode landing almost exactly on the date of the series premiere? Sorry to disappoint, but March 28, 2024 will not be written in Grey's Anatomy history.

Speaking to TVLine, Marinis had to deny any special episodes coming Grey’s Anatomy fans’ way. However, that doesn’t mean that the production team won’t acknowledge the 20 years of the show at all. The celebration just happens on a larger scale.

“The season itself celebrates the history of the show in a way. This is Season 20, and we’re celebrating that with the stories that we’re telling,” she said.

While this may seem like a very vague explanation, it doesn't contradict what's happening on fans' screens. Many have noted that the 20th season has the exact same feel as the beginning of the show, so Marinis, along with the entire production team, is playing to the nostalgic strings of the viewers.

The season will also feature some of Grey's Anatomy's veterans. Jessica Capshaw and Alex Landi will appear in the 20th season as their beloved characters, Arizona Robbins and Nico Kim. If that's not a sign that the team is celebrating the show's long history, we don't know what is.

Although the upcoming episode Walk on the Ocean won't be anything special in terms of the 20th anniversary celebration, it will be everything that fans love about Grey's Anatomy. So if you are interested, be sure to tune in to Grey's Anatomy every Thursday on ABC.
