Sometimes the lies are for the better.

Gravity Falls is an animated series that is a great watch both for kids and adults. The storylines of the show are complicated and the characters are certainly far from being one dimensional, which makes the show one of the best in the genre.

The show's narrative centers around Mabel and Dipper, the teenage twins who are forced to spend their summer in Gravity Falls. At first it seemed like their summer was going to be dull, but instead they ended up uncovering the paranormal mysteries of the town. And frankly, there was a lot more going on.

However, one of the biggest and most important enigmas of the show was the identity of the author who wrote the journals that were at the center of every story. And finding out who created the journals was one of the most satisfying parts of the series, but there was a time when fans almost figured it out before the show revealed it.

Season 1 gave fans a lot of little hints before unveiling that a twin brother of their uncle Stanford, named Stanley, was in the picture in the next chapter. Apparently, that was enough for the most eagle-eyed and sharp-minded fans to put it all together and solve the mystery in advance.

Gravity Falls' key secret was at risk of being spoiled much earlier than it was supposed to be shown to the audience, so the showrunners decided to think outside the box and make fans believe that they were in the wrong. Thus, they created a fake leak that was supposed to fool viewers, and it worked!

Showrunner Alex Hirsch made a fake drawing that featured a younger version of Old Man McGucket writing in the journals and leaked it on social media. Then he reposted the picture to his own account, hinting that he was angry about the reveal right now.

The "leaked" post only stayed up for a few minutes, but that was enough for fans to start questioning their previous theories.

As planned, the Gravity Falls fandom was taken in by the sophisticated prank. And the show, as scheduled, revealed the secret in the series' finale, making the ending that much more satisfying.
