GoT Star Booked His Prominent 3 Body Problem Gig by... Flirting?
Benioff and Weiss cast their previous big thing’s star in 3 Body Problem not because of his stellar audition but thanks to his spectacular flirting skills they witnessed!
Summary:
- Benioff and Weiss’ new sci-fi show 3 Body Problem just premiered on Netflix.
- Some members of the Game of Thrones cast returned to work with D&D once again, including the Sam Tarly actor John Bradley.
- Benioff and Weiss admitted that they cast Bradley in their new series thanks to witnessing his unmatched flirting skills and dry humor years ago.
Back in the day, Game of Thrones launched many aspiring actors’ careers into the stratosphere, making them superstars overnight.
Working with Benioff and Weiss became a dream of many young performers after that; and 3 Body Problem, their new show, gave such an opportunity to some of them. But ultimately, the Game of Thrones creators wanted to work with the members of their old cast.
Some, because they’re great actors; others, because they’re a joy to be around. But one particular person convinced Benioff and Weiss of his worthiness by… Flirting.
GoT’s John Bradley Returns in 3 Body Problem
Any Game of Thrones fan will immediately recognize John Bradley as the shy, unconfident, but ultimately wholesome Samwell “Sam” Tarly, Jon Snow’s best friend.
But John Bradley is nothing like his former character; in fact, he’s an absolute menace with his dry sense of humor and unmatched charisma of a lady’s man.
“We thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be fun someday to work with John and see him play a character kind of closer to the actual John?' So, not to say that he is quite as much of a d*ck as [his 3 Body Problem character] Jack, but he’s just wildly funny and we wanted to see that,” Benioff and Weiss explained on the show’s LA debut.
The showrunners admitted that they first had that idea when they saw Bradley flirting with a tourist in an Irish pub years ago during their Game of Thrones days. That’s when D&D envisioned casting the actor in their future work, and they did just that.
So Far, 3 Body Problem Has a Rough Start
At the time of writing, Benioff and Weiss’ new TV show isn’t performing miraculously, per say. 3 Body Problem’s first reviews are mixed at best, and with an unimpressive 6.4 IMDb score and an even more underwhelming 44% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes, no one would dare call the series an immediate success.
3 Body Problem seemingly had everything going for it. From Game of Thrones’ team led by Benioff and Weiss to its core cast members like John Bradley, Liam Cunningham, and Jonathan Pryce to Netflix’s generosity as the platform issued over $20M per episode, it had it all…
But despite the devastating first impression, it’s still too early to judge 3 Body Problem’s legacy: the tides may yet turn.
