Gilmore Girls has really dropped the ball with this one.

Lorelai is an exemplary mom to Rory – she is caring, loving, up with the times, and always on her side no matter what. Viewers even forget that their story started way back when Lorelai was just 16, pregnant, and alone. Christopher, Rory’s dad, is pretty much a stranger that pops up once in a while, but never sticks around enough for it to matter.

The million-dollar question is, why did Richard and Emily love Christopher so much (sometimes it even seemed like they wished he had been their son instead of Lorelai)? That’s just the biggest plot hole in the entire show.

Reddit users have pointed out that Christopher got Lorelai pregnant at 16 (they both participated willingly, but that’s usually the narrative with teen pregnancies), he was a deadbeat father to Rory, his post-Lorelai love life was a mess, and he left Lorelai again when he found out that his new girlfriend was pregnant.

Christopher should’ve been Emily and Richard’s enemy number one from the beginning, but instead he got their love and approval in the way Lorelai never did – not when she was 16 or much later in life.

Well, some fans believe that it all had to do with the fact that Christopher came from a good and wealthy family and that he, unlike Lorelai, wanted to tie the knot to avoid a scandal. Sure, Christopher did offer Lorelai to get married when he found out about the pregnancy, and it was she who refused, but was it really enough to choose him over your own daughter?

Unfortunately, Emily and Richard weren’t without fault. They wanted to keep up their appearances and not lose face in front of their high-society friends, and that’s the only thing that mattered to them for years. This is how they justified treating Christopher better than Lorelai.

Still, after many decades and lots of heartache, they should’ve understood that there was more to life that adhering to the society’s impossible standards. Imagine if they had told Christopher off for everything he had done (or hadn’t) just once… It would’ve been nothing short of spectacular!

Have you forgiven Christopher for being an absent father?
