Where is the show going?

When a soap runs as long as General Hospital, there is always room for error and repetition. After all, it's almost impossible to come up with a storyline that hasn't been done in one form or another over the past 60 years. The audience understands this and keeps an open mind.

The writers, however, seem to take advantage of the viewers' kindness and come up with the exact same stories with the exact same characters with no consequences. Sonny Corinthos, who has been on screen for half of General Hospital's entire run, tops this list every time.

Does Sonny Corinthos Die on General Hospital?

While there are many viewers who are emotionally attached to Sonny and everything he's been through, there are also viewers who desperately want Sonny to stop being the most important and prominent character on the show. On Reddit, fans of the show are ready to riot for him to be gone, and soon.

“What is Sonny? 60 or so, and he’s going around beating up people just because he thinks he has a right too. <...> 60 years old men don’t run around beating up others and it’s [ridiculous]. I’d be ok with someone killing him off already,” Redditor Drama-Free64 said.

While the problem with Sonny still being this untouchable mobster that the writers want us to think he is is obvious, there is also a much bigger problem that comes with him being a central character for the show. General Hospital continues to put all of its eggs in the mature audience basket and completely ignores younger characters and viewers.

The only young characters that viewers really cared about in recent years were Trina, Spencer, and Esme. While their storylines weren't exactly original and fresh either, they did have some story progression and character development, all of which was thrown away with Spencer and Esme's deaths.

If General Hospital has any plans to survive on TV for more than 5 more years, they need to think about the continuation. The younger characters who will inevitably take Sonny and Carly's place in the soap's hierarchy must have a storyline already developed. At the moment, however, it seems that the show doesn't want to look into the future at all.

If you think the show is great as it is now and want to see where the show takes Sonny this time around, be sure to tune in to General Hospital Monday through Friday on ABC.
